Preparing for a marine survey can go a long way in helping ensure you get the most out of your survey and expedite any sale or purchase. The boat seller or seller’s broker, the client, and marine surveyor will need to collaborate closely to prepare the vessel for surveying.
Please review this handy Marine Survey Preparation Checklist below.
- Ensure the surveyor has detailed and specific directions to the boat including dock and slip number.
- Keys to the engine, cabin, engine room, and all lockers must be onboard
- Boat registration (ships papers) must be laid out for easy access
- Remove as many personal items as possible to ensure the surveyor has access to all systems and lockers and to help provide an easy to navigate travel path. If this is a live aboard, you may want to give yourself extra time moving any items to temporary storage.
- Batteries will need to be installed and connected to test the electrical systems.
- Check to ensure water, fuel, and waste tanks are filled as this will help in leak detection.
- Take the necessary steps to prepare for a haul out including any associated fees which are typically paid by the prospective buyer. We can’t stress this enough. If your survey includes a haul out, you will need to contact the marina ahead of time, and have them standing by to haul and pressure wash the bottom. Ensure the marina has the contact details for the surveyor and any other parties involved like the owner or broker.
- The owner or broker will need to be present to transport the boat to the lift. They do not need to be present for the survey itself.
- While it is in your best interest to be present during the survey, please avoid bringing friends or furry friends. While we don’t mind answering questions during the survey, we do need to be able to have clear unobstructed access. A marine survey requires keen observation skills and a clear mind.
- Check all safety equipment is onboard e.g., fire extinguishers, visual distress signals, life jackets.
- Verify shore power is available and connected as the surveyor will test both AC and DC functionality.
- Have all electronics onboard, installed, and connected
